CLPI Initiatives
CLPI works to accomplish its mission and goals through various initiatives.

CLPI communicates the importance and process of nonprofit advocacy and lobbying through major trade publications, the mass media and CLPI materials. CLPI outreach also includes wide dissemination of IRS clarification letters that provide answers to key questions about lobbying by nonprofits and foundation funding of nonprofits that lobby.

CLPI staff and Training Fellows facilitate interactive, participatory workshops about building organizational capacity and developing plans for public policy engagement. Topics covered include getting your board’s support for engagement, communicating effectively with legislators, recruiting and mobilizing grassroots support, and understanding and adhering to the laws governing lobbying. Contact CLPI at 202-387-5048 to inquire about scheduling a training for your organization, coalition, or network.
Web site - www.clpi.org
CLPI.org provides the most extensive information available on nonprofit advocacy and lobbying. The Web site includes a Training Resource Center with “one-pagers” and tutorials on lobbying strategy and laws as well as success stories about nonprofits lobbying for their causes.
Legal and How-To Materials
CLPI’s collection of practical “one-pagers” include information on the laws governing lobbying, strategies for effective lobbying, and information on how to build organizational capacity for successful lobbying and advocacy work. Make a Difference for Your Cause: Strategies for Nonprofit Engagement in Legislative Advocacy is an essential resource guide for nonprofit practitioners and volunteers. In order to make this information widely accessible, this publication is available for download at no charge at www.clpi.org, sold in bulk quantitites, and distributed at all CLPI trainings. This guide provides legal do’s and don’ts, strategy how-to’s, and inspirational stories from nonprofit leaders about why they lobby.
Technical Assistance
CLPI staff answers questions and offers technical assistance and referrals on a wide range of topics relevant to nonprofit advocacy and lobbying. The CLPI Web site encourages site visitors to email CLPI to receive expert advice.

Nonprofit voices are critical to developing effective public policy. As a result, CLPI monitors for and lobbies against legislation and regulations that would curtail nonprofit advocacy and lobbying rights. In addition, CLPI works to proactively expand these rights.
